Band In Reveiw: Elephants Gerald

How can I fully express my endorsement for Elephants Gerald. Amazingly talented; when you’re talking the “It Factor” they have it by the pound. “Trunkated” is a cover to cover national album in the making, not to mention the demo is one that which most indie artist would kill for as a finished product. That is the definition of talent, of national potential. The fact that Elephants Gerald is not signed to a major label or major management/promotional group is nothing less of a crime. They have the ability to follow in the footsteps of Ben Harper, Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz by bringing their own version of soulful Americana to the masses; and having the masses dumbstruck.

GOM Song of the Day: Frankenstein by Mi-Careme

It’s so hard now days to find in indie music something that is new& different; has its own identity… And on top of that, doesn’t just completely suck.  It’s been awhile since I have listened to a song/artist and the first thing out of my mouth is, “What the…” and instead of finishing my thought with the usual “Well, that was a waste of time.” I end up with “Yes, nice…” Mi-Careme is so good. They’re different, fun, catchy, just all round great.  Mi-Careme takes 90’s alternative, Orange County surf, 80’s pop and throws it into a blender with some insanity and makes something beautiful. Awesome.  For that, I give you “Frankenstein” by Mi-Careme your GOM Song of the Day.

Unsolicited Advice: Useless Information

It is a very sad thing that nowadays there is so little useless information. -Oscar Wilde

Don’t worry Oscar; Independent Bands are trying to help that situation. Why? Why if you are a mostly unknown, aspiring band do you not do whatever you can to provide EVERY piece of information about yourself and give as many means of contact as possible?  To be clever?  Just plain ignorance? Why so many questions? What am I talking about? Ok I’m done with the questions, now some examples.

Today, in my endless search for great talent, I found a band that hailed from Petoria… Yes, the fictional location inside the TV show Family Guy. Why? What if a venue, management company, potential fan, hell anyone came across you? Your location is pivotal information.  You can hear a very audible SLAP! from a great distance when I come across stupidity like this as my hand plants firmly on my forehead. All of you bands that reside in Petoria, BFE, The Middle of Nowhere, and (my Favorite) The 7th Circle of Hell; I want to let you know that like many others, I will be passing over you when looking for bands to feature here. Congratulations, you’re an idiot.

#2 on my “WHY?” list is bands that have zero contact info. I can understand not having your personal phone number online, but no email address? No way to personally contact you? What venue or booker is going to post publically on your wall information on booking or information on working with you? Think about it people. Is a free email that hard to set up? These are simple things that can make a huge difference in your band’s future.  Put in a little effort. Things like these show me that you really aren’t taking your band seriously, and if you aren’t why should I? Why should anyone take a chance on a band that doesn’t care?  This is a new age. Success doesn’t come to you.  You have to brutally attack to make it today, or I guess you can just sit around and whine about why you haven’t made it yet; your call.

A Quick Look: The Difference Between Indie and Indie

I know it’s confusing.  I’ve been asked about this before and I feel it’s a subject that needs explaining. In the music world Indie is a Homonym, a word that is spelled and pronounced the same but has two different meanings such as with stalk (part of a plant) and stalk (follow/harass a person) and with left (past tense of leave) and left (opposite of right).  You want to know the most confusing part? A lot of Indie bands are also Indie bands, but not all Indie bands have to be Indie bands.  Let’s let that sink in for a bit.

Indie is a term for a band that is independent from a major organization such as a major label or production company, but also is a type of genre that describes the unique sound the band has.  Both Indie the genre and Indie the subculture actually derive from the same roots.  In the 1950’s, bands and producers in the United Kingdom got fed up with major record labels and started small, low funded Independent labels to represent themselves and other unknown bands, the U.S. quickly followed suit. These bands were known as Indie bands because they ran independently from the major labels.  Soon, all bands that were out on their own without major help were also referred to as Indie. In the 1980’s the term Indie morphed into a way to describe the new sound coming from these independent bands. Indie turned into a category of genre that was sometimes interchangeable with Alternative. Therefore a band that ended up getting signed to a major label still could end up being described as Indie.  Hopefully this has cleared up some confusion, and if not; at least I know I tried.
